League Concussion Protocol
Purpose
To protect player safety by ensuring proper recognition, removal, evaluation, and return-to-play procedures for suspected concussions.
What Is a Concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head, face, neck, or body that causes rapid movement of the brain.
Common causes in softball:
- Hit by a ball (batting, fielding, or base running)
- Collision with another player
- Fall or impact with ground/fence
Signs and Symptoms
Observable signs include confusion, dizziness, slow responses, or loss of consciousness. Reported symptoms include headache, nausea, balance problems, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light or noise.
Immediate Action
If a concussion is suspected, the following actions will occur:
- Play will be stopped immediately
- The player will be removed from the game
- Player will be monitored and emergency services contacted if severe symptoms occur
No Same-Day Return
Any player suspected of concussion may not return to play the same day.
Medical Evaluation
Players must be evaluated and cleared in writing by a licensed healthcare professional before returning.
Reporting
Document all incidents including date, time, and symptoms.
Player Responsibility
Players must report symptoms honestly and follow medical advice.
League Responsibility
Provide education (all registered players will acknowledge this protocol as part of the registration process each season), enforce protocol, and encourage safe play.
